Another successful Roland Bryant Cup

By Professor Roland Bryant

The first-ever all-indoor Roland Bryant Cup sporting competition between students of the two NSW-based Dental Schools (The University of Sydney and Charles Sturt University) was held on Saturday 15 May 2022.

This competition, first organised by students in 2010, and now sponsored by ADA, Guild Insurance, A-dec and Avant dental lab, was given the title by those original students, and this year was held in Sydney, entirely at the Noel Martin Sports and Aquatic Centre on the University of Sydney campus.

Although the name of the venue was probably “lost” on most of the students, in the midst of the day’s activity, it was a good reminder of the recognition given to the former dean’s contribution to University of Sydney. This indoor location for all events was necessitated by the excessively wet grounds around Sydney following recent rains.

The day was excellently hosted by Univ Sydney students and the planning of the day has never been more cordial, thanks to the two student presidents --- Anushka Fernando (USyd) and Zoe Watson (CSU).  It was pleasing to see a number of Univ Sydney teaching staff and a couple of CSU part-tme staff present to provide support for the day.

After the early years when CSU dominated this event, in recent years the Cup has regularly moved back and forwards between Sydney and Orange.   It has now returned to Orange following this year’s overall win by the students from CSU.

CSU were successful in netball (women), dodgeball and frisbee (the latter two sports especially provided excitement for the spectators);  USyd were too good in the men’s basketball and honours were shared for the mixed soccer.

The day provided good opportunity for interaction between the student groups and the contributions of the sponsors were much appreciated.

The 2023 RB Cup is scheduled for Orange, probably in early-May.
