Apical seal vs Coronal seal, which is more important?
After cleaning and shaping the root canal spaces, they need to be sealed to prevent reinfection. Obturation by surgery, by conventional obturation. Coronal seal by composites, crowns with cements. After obturation, how to optimise the seal using restorative materials.

Learning Objectives
- Understand the importance of coronal AND root canal seal.
- Understand that, sometimes conventional sealing is not possible, and surgical procedures can be adjunct to achieve an optimum result.
Dr Jimmy Chan is an Endodontist based in Sydney, practices in Maroubra, Bella Vista and Liverpool. His journey began in 2008 as a dental student at the International Medical University (IMU), Malaysia. He then began his clinical training at the University of Adelaide and graduated there in 2013. Upon graduation, he spent 3 years in Singapore practising as a general dentist. During his time there, he discovered my passion for root canal treatments. He then embarked on a life changing journey to specialise in this field. Along the way, he travelled to prestigious Universities like University of Pennsylvania, to learn more about Endodontics before settling at the University of Adelaide to complete his specialist training under the tutelage of Professor Giampiero Rossi-Fedele.
Upon completion of his specialist training in 2020, he moved to Sydney and was fortunate enough to work in Gentle Endodontics, which is one of the busiest endodontic practices in Sydney. After 3 years there, he decided to set on for new adventures on his own, to see what the future held filled with excitement and optimism.
In his free time, he lectures locally and internationally about root canal treatments, take professional exams, and tries to be a pokemon master.
