Dr Tom van Heumen graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Science from the University of Queensland in 2008.
During his undergraduate studies, he was commissioned into the Australian Army and, as a junior Dental Officer, was deployed across Australia in support of numerous exercises and humanitarian operations.
After seven years of practising general dentistry in both military and private settings, Tom pursued his passion for periodontics by undertaking specialist training at the University of Melbourne, graduating with a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Periodontology) in 2018.
As a registered periodontist, Tom has maintained a distinguished military career and now serves as a Lieutenant Colonel, overseeing all dental services across the Australian Defence Force. He is also a specialist clinical consultant at HMAS Kuttabul Base, Potts Point, where he continues to support defence members and veterans. In addition, Tom has lectured locally and internationally on periodontitis and implantology.
Outside of dentistry, Tom is a proud father who leads an active lifestyle as an ultra-distance runner and ocean swimmer. He enjoys the challenge of endurance pursuits and spending time outdoors with his family.
