Ahpra has released new guidelines on performing non-surgical cosmetic procedures and these rules come into effect on 2 September 2025, in response to an increase in complaints in this area. Consider whether you need to make changes to your practise to remain compliant.
Located within the Cosmetic surgery hub on the Ahpra website, you will find the cosmetic procedure guidelines page, which includes an advance copy of the guidelines. When looking at how you practise and whether you are compliant, you need to check whether you meet Ahpra and the Dental Board of Australia’s expectations. In particular, consider:
- Your specific skills/training/competency and experience, and whether they are considered suitable for the treatment you perform. If you perform cosmetic procedures, a portion of your CPD must be related to that
- Obtaining informed consent to treatment and costs. The regulator has raised current concerns around the inappropriate utilisation of patient superannuation to pay for cosmetic treatment
- Advertising – there are strict guidelines on advertising non-surgical cosmetic procedures. This includes websites and social media.
Remember that non-surgical cosmetic procedures and the associated advertising guidelines include dental veneers, cosmetic injectables, tooth whitening and numerous other procedures.
