Speakers and Topics

Promoting a Research Culture Among Public Oral Health Services in NSW: the Why, How and Benefits of Adopting this Approach

This talk will:

  • focus on the importance of enabling research in public oral health settings and its alignment with the NSW Health Oral Health Strategic Plan (2022-32)
  • Identify barriers to research engagement at a patient, clinician and management level
  • Share proven strategies with examples on how to support a research culture in public oral health settings
  • Highlight benefits of undertaking research for improving patient outcomes,  evidenced based practice and health service delivery

The presentation will be interactive with recoded video presentations  from public oral health staff and management along with engagement activities for attendees through live polls and discussions.

Trauma Guidelines for the Primary and Permanent Dentition

This lecture outlines current evidence-based management of traumatic injuries to primary and permanent teeth for public sector dentists, highlighting rapid assessment, correct injury classification, and key differences between dentitions. Practical, guideline-aligned steps for fractures, luxations, intrusions, and avulsions are covered, alongside documentation and follow-up protocols to minimise long-term complications.

Beyond Clinical Care: Legal and Ethical challenges in Public sector Dentistry
Professional Indemnity gaps, complaints, consent and multidisciplinary care

Immuno Oncology Meets Oral Health: A Dentist’s Guide to the Next Cancer Era

This lecture discusses the major classes of modern cancer immunotherapies – in particular, immune checkpoint inhibitors, but also CAR‑T and other emerging agents – and their expanding indications across common cancers, including the emergent role of immunotherapy in head and neck cancer.

Attendees will learn how to integrate pre‑immunotherapy dental assessment, preventive strategies, and make modifications to everyday dental practice to support safe delivery of cancer care. This lecture also discusses the increasingly recognised oral and orofacial toxicities which may arise in any patient treated with these agents, such as autoimmune-like mucosal diseases, salivary hypofunction, orofacial pain and chemosensory disorders.

  •

MRONJ: What Every Public Dentist Needs to Know

This talk will provide a practical overview of MRONJ for public dental practitioners, focusing on recognition, risk assessment, and everyday clinical decision-making. Using real-world clinical cases, we will explore common presentations of MRONJ, risk factors associated with antiresorptive and antiangiogenic medications, and strategies to prevent disease progression.

Emphasis will be placed on the public dental setting, including management pathways, referral thresholds, and communication with medical colleagues. Attendees will leave with clear, practical take-home messages applicable to their clinical situations.
