Course Overview

The Oral Cancer Masterclass series consists of six (6) comprehensive recordings bringing together NSW’s top Head and Neck Specialists, Medical and Radiation Oncologists, Rehabilitative Surgeons, Prosthodontists and Oral Medicine Specialists to discuss the latest developments in oral cancer diagnosis, treatment and research.

Each recording is presented by specialists and offers the most current and practical information directly relating to your everyday practice. Session topics include the identification, investigation and initial management of malignant, or potentially malignant, lesions found in the oral cavity.

Additional topics include latest treatments for advanced oral cancer, such as head and neck surgery, reconstruction, prosthodontics, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.  Plus, a thorough review of the complications that may arise following these therapies.

Extending further support to our community, a portion of the proceeds of this Oral Cancer Masterclass Series will be donated to Chris O’Brien Lifehouse Cancer Hospital.

  • Identify and assess malignant and potentially malignant oral lesions
    Participants will be able to recognise early clinical signs of oral cancer, conduct appropriate investigations, and implement evidence-based initial management strategies in general and specialist practice.

  • Understand current multidisciplinary treatment approaches for advanced oral cancer
    Participants will gain an integrated understanding of contemporary surgical, reconstructive, prosthodontic, radiotherapeutic, and chemotherapeutic options, including indications, protocols, and expected outcomes.

  • Evaluate and manage complications arising from oral cancer treatments
    Participants will be able to anticipate, identify, and manage common post-treatment complications, improving patient support and long-term quality of life across the continuum of care.

Session 1: Oral Screening and Diagnostics

Presenters: Prof Carsten Palme, A/Prof Mark Schifter

Session One begins with a presentation from one of New South Wales leading Head and Neck surgeons, Professor Carsten Palme, and an introduction to the Masterclass and the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.

Following on from this, the discussion will focus on how to perform a comprehensive head, neck and oral mucosal examination, the importance of a dental practitioner’s role in the early assessment of a patient with malignant or potentially malignant lesions of the oral cavity, and oral cancer screening and detection techniques.

Session 2: Pre-radiation/ Pre-Chemotherapy dental assessment and management

Presenters: Dr Dale Howes, Dr John Martin, Dr Anny Huang

Session Two continues to explore the management of oral cancer and introduces the complexities of oral cancer therapies. Drs Dale Howes, John Martin and Anny Huang will discuss specific dental considerations relating to pre-radiation and/or pre-chemotherapies. This session includes strategies to assess and manage dental considerations prior to traumatic or invasive non-surgical cancer therapies.

Session 3: Resection, Surgical and Prosthodontic Rehabilitation, and Chemotherapy

Presenters: Dr Carsten Palme, Dr Adrian Pokorny

Session Three explores surgical oral cancer treatments with a review of surgical case studies, discussing the complexity of oral reconstruction and prosthodontic rehabilitation. This session provides an elevated foundation of understanding to assist in the long-term treatment planning and will also touch on the effects of chemotherapy, including common side effects and how general dentists can help patients manage their dental health during treatment.

 

Session 4: Radiotherapy

Presenters: Dr Sarah Bergamin, Dr Suma Sukumar

This session will focus on the complexities of oral cancer therapies and dental consideration. In particular, common side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, and how general dental practitioners can help their patients manage these issues.

Session 5: Diet, Physio, Trismus

Presenters: Dr Emma Charters, Shane McAuliffe

• Impact of advances in head and neck cancer on speech and swallowing
• Identify common problems encountered in speech, swallowing and nutrition after an oral cancer diagnosis and treatment
• Summary of the current approaches in the treatment of nutrition, speech and swallowing disorders following an oral cancer diagnosis and treatment
• Discussion of advances in trismus rehabilitation and update on recent evidence
• Update on nutritional support during oral cancer treatment
• Case studies: interdisciplinary patient care before and after treatment for oral cancer

Session 6: Dental Management and Maintenance

Presenters: Dr Steph Rose, Dr Dale Howes, Dr John Martin, Dr Anny Huang

Session Six concludes this comprehensive series and provides final helpful tools to that the general dental practitioners may be used every day for long-term treatment planning and maintenance.
