Join your dental industry colleagues for a full day symposium with a plethora of renowned speakers.

The Filipino Australian Dental Association (FADA) proudly presents its 4th annual symposium: Advancing Dentistry through Education and Outreach.

This event brings together dental professionals, educators, and community leaders to discuss and share the latest techniques and innovations in dental care. The symposium focuses on knowledge sharing to improve clinical skills within practices and help clinicians provide optimum dental care for their patients.

Attendees will gain valuable insights from expert speakers, participate in hands-on workshops, and engage in discussions aimed at shaping the future of dentistry through education while raising funds for outreach initiatives both locally and internationally. You will have the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and skills while enhancing the lives of communities in need.

LECTURE PROGRAM | DAY ONE (7.5 CPD Hrs):

Professor Richard Chan | Specialist Prosthodontist
ABCs of Implant Prosthodontics
A quick journey through several decades of some of the more common and challenging

Implant prosthodontic problems. On completion, participants should be familiar with:

  • ideal cases for early implant clinicians
  • issues related to subgingival over-contouring of implant restorations
  • potential issues of “immediate” implant treatment protocols
  • how to tell a good implant from a bad one! ……and more!

Associate Professor Tino Mercado | Periodontist
Clinical Periodontitis, Staging and Grading and the Whole Team Approach Periodontics for General Dental Practitioners

“Not your everyday gum disease” – Discussion of anatomical conditions, diseases and medications that can mimic, exacerbate, or affect the manifestation of plaque-induced periodontal diseases. When to Refer and When to Manage Periodontal Diseases

Plaque-induced periodontal diseases are characterised by clinical gingival redness and inflammation, bleeding on probing and if progressive, deeper probing depth, clinical attachment loss, bone loss, increased mobility, and eventual tooth loss. However, different systemic and hormonal conditions such as diabetes mellitus and pregnancy pyogenic granuloma, autoimmune diseases such as lichen planus; pemphigoid, and systemic lupus erythematosus, malignant conditions such as squamous cell carcinoma and other local factors such trauma from occlusion can modify, aggravate, and affect the clinical manifestations of classic gum disease posing challenges to the diagnoses and management. This lecture will discuss these different systemic and local conditions that can affect the clinical manifestation and progression of the “everyday gum disease” and will also suggest ways on its diagnoses and management.

Associate Professor Sue-Ching Yeoh |  Oral Medicine Specialist
Red, Amber, Green (Oral Mucosal Flags) – How to Risk Assess Patients and Lesions
Oral cancer remains one of the most preventable yet consistently late-diagnosed malignancies in clinical practice. The five-year survival rate for early-stage disease exceeds 80%, yet the majority of cases continue to present at an advanced stage — a statistic that reflects failures not in treatment, but in detection. The dental clinician occupies a uniquely privileged position: regular, close-up access to the oral mucosa that no other healthcare professional routinely has. This lecture explores how to use that position effectively, providing clinicians with the knowledge to recognise mucosal red flags, conduct a meaningful risk assessment, and make confident, timely clinical decisions.

Dr Naveen K Loganathan | Paediatric Specialist
Molar-Incisor Hypomineralisation: Current Concepts and Clinical Updates
Molar–Incisor Hypomineralisation (MIH) is a qualitative developmental defect of systemic origin affecting enamel of one or more permanent first molars, frequently associated with involvement of the permanent incisors. The clinical features often complicate restorative management due to reduced enamel mechanical properties, compromised bonding, and increased treatment-related anxiety in paediatric patients.

  • The global prevalence of MIH has been reported to be 13.1% although significant geographic variability exists. Current evidence supports a multifactorial aetiology, recent research has also suggested a potential role for genetic susceptibility affecting enamel-forming proteins and ameloblast function, although definitive causal mechanisms remain under investigation.
  • This presentation will critically review current concepts in the pathogenesis, epidemiology, and diagnostic criteria of MIH, differential diagnosis, distinguishing MIH from other developmental enamel defects such as fluorosis, enamel hypoplasia, and Amelogenesis Imperfecta.
  • In addition, the lecture will address recent clinical advances in the management of MIH, including strategies for hypersensitivity control, preventive remineralisation approaches, and minimally invasive restorative interventions. Evidence-based treatment modalities such as resin infiltration, adhesive restorative materials, and the use of full coronal coverage (preformed metal crowns, zirconia crowns) for severely affected molars will be discussed. Consideration will also be given to long-term treatment planning, including extraction strategies and interdisciplinary management where appropriate.

Dr Peter Foo | Specialist Orthodontist
Challenges and Practical Tips on Orthodontic Treatment Using Clear Aligners Clear aligner therapy has revolutionised orthodontic practice, offering patients an aesthetic, comfortable, and hygienic alternative to traditional fixed appliances. However, achieving predictable, high quality outcomes requires more than just submitting a digital scan. In addition to an understanding of orthodontic principles and fundamentals, it necessitates a deep understanding of the unique biomechanics of thermoplastic materials and proactive management of potential treatment hurdles.

  • This presentation will bridge the gap between digital planning and clinical reality, addressing the common challenges clinicians face, including:
  • Case Selection Pitfalls: Recognising limitations in complex movements (e.g.,severe rotations, vertical movements).
  • Predictability Issues: Managing discrepancies between the digital simulation and actual tooth movement. Some tips on how to overcome these issues will be discussed.
  • Compliance and Retention: Overcoming patient non-compliance.
  • Troubleshooting Tracking: Techniques for managing unexpected “daylight” between the teeth and aligner.
  • How to overcome some of the limitations of clear aligner treatment.

In addition, prepare to continue your learning by registering for the hands-on workshop the following day. Click here to register for this event separately and save $90 when registering for both courses in the same order (attendees may choose to attend one or both days).
