IPC: Which standard applies?

For dental practices in Australia, the only valid standard for calibrating and validating sterilisers (autoclaves) is AS 5369:2023. This standard supersedes AS/NZS 4187:2014 and AS/NZS 4815:2006 and must be used for reprocessing of reusable medical devices in all healthcare settings, including dental practices.

Next steps for your practice:

· Ensure your sterilisation service provider is using the latest AS 5369:2023 protocols and is staying on‑site for the full validation.

· Update your infection‑control policies to reference AS 5369:2023, and document daily and annual testing accordingly.

To ensure full compliance, consider arranging staff training and self-audits, especially ahead of accreditation or in case of onsite inspections from the Dental Council of NSW.
