Hi, I’m Luke Kijvanit in my final year of dental school, currently looking for opportunities to work as a dentist. I am fascinated by all aspects of dentistry and as a result I enjoy the continual opportunity to learn and improve. My background was in in biochemistry, where I researched the effects of molecular interactions and its application in people. Similarly, dentistry is also about molecular interactions and processes, but in extension it encompasses human interactions, not just being a technical endeavour but a clinical one. This side of dentistry I have come to appreciate more after clinical placement and shadowing experiences. This clinical aspect is what I find rewarding in dentistry, being able to deliver quality care but also building trust with our patients.

I’m a left-handed final-year Doctor of Dental Medicine candidate with experience across general, emergency, paediatric, periodontic, prosthodontic, oral surgery, and special needs departments at dental hospitals in Sydney. I’m keen to further develop my skills in oral surgery and general dentistry.

My research experience includes constructing the ethics submission for an experimental study under the supervision of Prof. Skapetis and Prof. Alffenaar. The project, “Evaluating the feasibility of saliva as a new matrix for therapeutic drug monitoring: A prospective observational study”, explores saliva as a potential alternative to blood for drug monitoring. If validated, this approach could significantly influence chairside therapeutic drug dosing and improve patient care.

Beyond the clinic, I’ve led digital transformation projects for medical practices, developed patient-facing content across web and social platforms, and coordinated global health awareness campaigns. I’m passionate about integrating technology with hands-on clinical care to deliver excellent patient outcomes and practical workflow solutions.

Beyond placements, I’ve further honed these skills as a year representative in the student society and as a casual academic at the University, where I’ve worked closely with staff and peers.
