Avoiding Common Pitfalls in Implant Dentistry – a surgical perspective

Dr Patrick Bowman
Many clinicians now routinely place, restore, and maintain dental implants. Implant-supported prostheses are an excellent option for restoration of occlusal function and smile aesthetics in a partially or fully edentulous patient. Unfortunately, evidence shows that there is a high prevalence of peri-implantitis, approximately 25% of patients and 18% of implants. Â Â
There is a growing consensus that the majority of these complications are from clinician-related errors. This presentation will explore common errors in surgical planning and execution that lead to peri-implant disease. We will focus on core treatment principles to minimise these complications.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the surgical principles underpinning implant dentistry
- Identify and avoid common surgical errors in implant treatment
