Free dental treatment worth more than $9000 was provided at Filling the Gap’s latest charity clinic

9 January 2020

A total of 21 patients from charities including the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation, William Booth House, The Station and WASH House were treated at the day, which took place at ADA NSW’s offices at St Leonards.

A great team of volunteers, overseen by Dr Paul Gratiaen and Dr Thien-Nhien Nguyen, provided dentures to the patients seen on the day.

“It was wonderful to see the clinic supported by some wonderful volunteers,” ADA NSW Clinical Supervisor and Patient Clinic Coordinator Jessica Smith said. “Everyone involved provided valuable assistance and showed terrific teamwork.

“A great team of volunteers, assisted by one of our sponsors Leif Svensson, a prosthetist and owner of Sculpt Dental Lab, and technical support from 3Shape’s Richard Schuhmacher provided denture care on the day.”

“Thanks to our volunteers, we have been able to arrange for the treatment planning of denture work and study models for complex case management.”

The total value of dental treatment provided on the day, which was on Thursday, December 12, was $9,132.67.

Thanks are also due to Sculpt Dental and 3Shape, who are new sponsors for the charity clinics held in Sydney.

This was the latest charity clinic hosted by Filling the Gap, which works to improve the health and quality of life of vulnerable people with poor oral health through the provision of pro bono dental aid programs.

Filling the Gap prioritises those most in need who are unable to access mainstream dental services, including asylum seekers and refugees, Indigenous Australians, and vulnerable people with complex and chronic health conditions by partnering with a range of charities.

To be eligible for treatment under Filling the Gap programs, people must be registered with one of our partner charities.

“The efforts of all staff, charities and volunteers have set the tone for what will be a tremendous year of growth for Filling the Gap in 2020,” Dr Smith said. “With the help and support of our sponsors, volunteers and charities, we will take Filling the Gap from strength to strength with the hope of expanding our network of benevolent services to the community.”
