Healthcare key driver of employment nationally

Healthcare is a key driver of employment nationally, labour force data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows.

According to data released in June, 33,000 jobs were added in healthcare in the 12 months to May 2017. Compared to 2010, there are now 366,000 extra jobs in the sector. With 1.6 million employees, the healthcare sector now makes up 14 per cent of the Australian workforce.

Meanwhile the number of dentists in Australia grew by 2 per cent to 16,781 in the year to December 2016, according to the Australian Dental Workforce in Numbers report – the smallest increase in the past five years.
