Media Advisor - Part Time

Dynamic, proactive media advisor needed to promote good oral health messages to the public through the media, working in a fast-paced communications and advocacy team.

The Australian Dental Association NSW (ADA NSW) is the peak professional association for dentists and dental students in NSW and the ACT, with more than 4600 members. About the role
The role of the Media Advisor is to undertake effective media communications. Reporting to the Head of Communications and Public Affairs, this three-day a week position involves actively liaising with journalists to promote oral health issues in the media, responding to media enquiries and managing contentious issues. The Media Advisor also works closely with the Advocacy and Policy Advisor to implement advocacy campaigns. You will run oral health campaigns and prepare media collateral, including articles, media kits for members and media releases. 

Key responsibilities

  • Media and issues management

  • First contact for all media enquiries

  • Monitor oral health issues in the media

  • Generate story ideas to get key oral health messages into the media

  • Actively engage with journalists to provide timely and accurate responses to media inquires

  • Develop media materials on key issues

  • Write articles

  • Identify media opportunities and pitch story ideas to journalists

  • Develop trusted relationships with key journalists

  • Provide briefings to journalists on key issues impacting dentistry

  • Establish relationships with key stakeholders and work on joint campaigns

  • Increase ADA NSW’s media profile through articles and lining up radio and TV interviews for ADA NSW’s President

  • Provide strategic advice to key spokespeople in proactive and reactive media environments

  • Build effective and collaborative relationships with the Health Ministers’ office, journalists, the executive, and Board Members, to ensure consistent and credible messages are presented.  

Required Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in journalism, media, communications or PR

  • At least 5 years’ experience in similar role or in journalism

  • Good media contacts

  • Demonstrated experience in media relations

  • Ability to operate within a high pressure environment, working to tight deadlines

  • Ability to identify emergent and contentious issues and develop effective communication strategies

  • Effectively advise and manage internal clients and stakeholders to minimise the potential impact of emergent issues and appropriately position the ADA NSW brand, services and programs

  • Comprehensive understanding of the news cycle across all media platforms

  • Experience working as a journalist will be looked upon favourably
