PRESENTED BY

Dr Aodhan Docherty
The increasing demand from our patients to provide highly aesthetic cosmetic dentistry coupled with the key factors of an ageing population and also the age of presentation for such treatments seemingly becoming younger, we as dentists are faced with an ethical dilemma. This dilemma involves which treatment modalities we are offering our patients and how much of a ‘restorative burden’ our treatment will have upon such patients.

There is clearly a paradigm shift evolving which involves approaching cosmetic dental cases from the perspective of reducing the restorative burden and doing as little treatment as possible whilst still delivering a highly aesthetic result.

This lecture will explore the steps involved in case assessment for cosmetic dentistry, the difference between additive and subtractive treatment approaches, the key roles that pre-restorative orthodontics, re-contouring and balanced symmetrical gingival margins play and the different techniques we can use to enhance our composite resin.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding the dilemma that clinicians face in terms of the restorative burden that their treatment will have on their patients
  • The steps involved in case assessment and how this forms the basis for treatment planning aesthetic cosmetic dental cases
  • Understanding the difference between additive and subtractive approaches to treatment
  • The use of key features such as (1) pre-restorative orthodontics (2) tooth re-contouring (3) appreciation for gingival margin levels
  • Different approaches and techniques using composite resin material for MI cases
