This course will provide you with knowledge and practical tools to recognise and manage the oral and dental needs of medically complex dental patients. Case-based learning will be used to simulate the setting in a dental office, and to stimulate the discussion.

The course will also review current knowledge about oral complications in cancer patients. The presentations will emphasize topics with practical implications for general dental practitioners. Recent advances in the diagnosis and management of common oral complications of cancer or cancer therapy will be presented.   

Topics include

• Dental management of medically complex patients 

• Bleeding and anticoagulants 

• Antibiotic prophylaxis

• Oral complications in cancer patients

Dr Sharon Elad
presenter

Sharon Elad, DMD MSc is the Professor and Chair of the Division of Oral Medicine at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA. Additionally, she is the Principal Consultant for Hospital Dentistry at the Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center. She is the head of several courses for residents and students related to oral medicine and dental management of medically complex patients.

Dr. Elad is the Chair of the MASCC/ISOO Mucositis Study Group. Previously she served as the Secretary of the ISOO and was the lead in the development of a position paper by MASCC/ISOO and EBMT about oral care for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Also Dr. Elad is also the section head for GVHD and for Viral Infections within the MASCC/ISOO Oral Care Study Group.
