Competent clinicians do not always perform well. The cause of failure in complicated and expensive dental treatment is often due to very simple factors. By examining actual cases and our heuristic approach to treatment planning this session will illuminate how simple oversights can often occur failing complex treatments. It will give practical insights into treatment planning to prevent failure, how to assess your competence and the role that emotions, agendas, attitudes and ego play in affecting our decision making.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the conscious competence matrix and how it applies to your skill set

  • Appreciate how emotions, agendas and attitudes can negatively influence treatment outcomes

  • Apply comprehensive clinical assessment to avoid the incorrect diagnosis of clinical symptoms
